China student visa: the official document checklist

In short: the X1 visa (study of more than 180 days) for China asks for 5 documents from every applicant, and 3 more when they apply to you. Where applicants in Pakistan submit: Apply in person at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Pakistan (the page read is the Karachi centre). X1 applicants must attend an interview in person every time. After arrival, apply for a residence permit within 30 days.

Passport: Valid for more than 6 months with at least one blank visa page; copy of the personal information page.

Chinese Embassy Dhaka through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Dhaka (Banani). Fill the online form on visaforchina.cn, wait for preliminary review (may lead to a video/in-person interview), then submit passport, biometrics and fee at the centre; no appointment needed. Chinese Embassy New Delhi or Consulates-General in Mumbai (Maharashtra, Karnataka) and Kolkata (Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal), by residence; submit through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) Kuala Lumpur: fill the form online, then submit in person and give fingerprints when status shows 'Passport to be submitted'. Malaysians are visa-free only for short visits (not study). (official source, checked 16 October 2026)

Chinese Embassy in the UK via the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (online form on the China Online Visa Processing System since 31 March 2025, then documents and biometrics at the centre). UK visa-free entry does not cover study.

Chinese Visa Application Service Center in the US for the applicant's area (online form, then in person). The US Chinese-embassy visa page could not be opened today (redirect loop).

How to prepare each document

Passport

Valid for the whole stay plus the margin the country asks (often 6 months beyond).
At least two blank visa pages.
Scan the photo page in colour, flat, all four corners visible.
If you renewed it, keep the old passport too.

Official verification: Only the issuing authority can confirm a passport; we never call it genuine.

National identity card (front and back)

Scan both sides in colour.
A side not in English needs a certified translation if the country asks.

Official verification: Only the national registry that issued it can confirm it.

Police certificate

From every country you lived in for the period asked; recent on the day you apply.

Official verification: The issuing police.

Pre-clearance (ATAS, CAQ, PAL and similar)

Apply as soon as the offer asks; some take weeks.

Official verification: The issuing authority.

Admission document

The document the visa asks for (CAS, I-20, CoE, LoA, admission letter).
Every detail must match your passport.

Official verification: The university can confirm it; ask its admissions office by e-mail.

Scholarship letter

The award letter with the amount and what it covers.

Official verification: The awarding body.

Bank statement

The period and balance the country asks, never dropping below the amount.
Printed after the holding period, recent on the day you apply.
Signed and stamped by the bank, or e-mailed by the bank where the mission asks.

Official verification: Only the bank can confirm a statement; we never call it genuine.
